![]() Solomon would have been a traditional Zulu, growing up herding cattle.” “Msinga is possibly the wildest part of Zulu land, very hot in the summer, and entirely a cattle culture. “I know this place in Msinga where Solomon grew up,” he says of Linda’s early years. Talking to Malan on the phone is challenging, because at his home “in a small town in the middle of nowhere” (Van Wyksdorp, in South Africa’s Western Cape), he’s flanked not just by his two barking Africanis dogs, but by an unruly group of Hadeda Ibis birds, shrieking at ear-shattering volumes. ![]() South African author and journalist Rian Malan brought Linda’s story to prominence via a 2000 Rolling Stone piece. It’s here again in director Jon Favreau’s new photorealistic CGI-retooling of the film, as is a new version of Linda’s original Mbube, which plays out as the end credits roll – a nod, perhaps, to its maligned songwriter. The success of both far eclipsed the stardom he’d experienced at home, and the spoils increased exponentially when the latter song appeared in Disney’s 1994 film The Lion King and its subsequent theatre production. He didn’t know how much money should have come his way when Mbube was turned into The Weavers’ 1952 American hit Wimoweh, and then again, when it became The Lion Sleeps Tonight via The Tokens in 1961. He didn’t know it, but Solomon Linda was plagued by foul play – or at least injustice – globally. Family members suspected he was poisoned, a victim of sorcery, bewitched by rivals jealous of his success. Foul play was suspected. Unable to carry on singing, he died three years later, practically penniless. Medical treatment proved oddly ineffective. ![]() Then in 1959, he fell ill with a diseased kidney. Already a snappy dresser, with the extra cash he got snappier. By night, his choir group the Evening Birds would compete in singing contests, invariably winning when fans saw Linda they’d buy him drinks. Darian’s high-pitched vocal - at one point soaring over the lines “In the jungle,/ the mighty jungle/ The lion sleeps tonight” - provided a memorable counterpoint to the lead vocal and the harmonized lower-register refrain “A-wimoweh-a-wimoweh.” The record spent three weeks atop the Billboard pop chart. Weiss had adapted from a South African song. Darian was a session singer and stage performer when she was asked by the producers Hugo Peretti and Luigi Creatore and the songwriter George David Weiss to provide backing vocals for “ The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” which Mr. Lynda Wells, a longtime friend and an executor of her estate, said the cause was complications after intestinal surgery. Darian reached far more listeners with her keening, uncredited background singing on the Tokens’ 1961 hit “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” Her versatile voice carried her there in 1960, where she sang and played kazoo with the New York Philharmonic under Leonard Bernstein’s baton. The second is that the (mostly wordless) falsetto vocals were improvised by Solomon Linda (over wonderfully sonorous and rhythmically compelling bass riffs) but it was not until near the end (about 2:22) of this, the third, take that he was inspired to produce the melody that is now universally associated with the words “In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight”.For the singer Anita Darian, getting to Carnegie Hall not only took practice it also took a kazoo. Rather like King Arthur, there was a folk belief that Shaka is not dead but only sleeping and one day he will return to liberate his people from their colonial oppressors. The first is that the “lion” referred to in the song is none other than the famous Zulu king Shaka Zulu (the subject of this famous poem) who acquired legendary status after his death. There are two other fascinating things about this tune. ![]() The song was also used in the Disney film The Lion King without any royalties being paid, leading to a lawsuit brought by Linda’s surviving relatives (which was settled out of court). Solomon Linda sold the rights to the Gallo record company for just ten shillings in 1949 so never received significant income from the worldwide sales. Since then it has had more cover versions than I’ve had hot dinners, mostly with an English title The Lion Sleeps Tonight or Wimoweh, a not-entirely-accurate phonetic attempt to render the isiZulu phrase uyimbube (“you are a lion”) which occurs in the song. The song Mbube by South African singer and composer Solomon Linda was first performed in 1939 and was an immediate hit in his native land. To cut a long story short I found this, and it’s been in my head ever since so I thought I’d share it here. I couldn’t identify some of the sounds so when I came inside I started googling about for various combinations of “birds singing in the evening”. The other evening it was warm enough for me to sit out in the garden, listening to the birdsong until it got dark. ![]() Unfortunately, while the cover of Ork is truly monstrous, it loses points for lack of originality. That is one weird giant creature on the cover of the obscure Psygnosis platformer Ork. Orkġ991 | WJS Design| Commodore Amiga, Atari ST Too bad it doesn’t come with this awesome box art, though. We’ll probably never get a modern Shadow Mangame, but at least the original is now readily available on Steam. Acclaim made a lot of terrible decisions during this time period (which is why the company no longer exists), but they absolutely nailed this box art, featuring a very creepy image of protagonist Michael LeRoi holding a skull in front of some of the more unsettling enemies in the game. CARRION COVER ART SERIALMixing voodoo, serial killers, and regular trips to hell, Shadow Man was one especially freaky game for the late ‘90s. Manhunt is basically a playable snuff film, and the unnerving image of one of the game’s bloody masked killers on the cover is certainly gets across that this is not a game for the weak-stomached or easily offended. CARRION COVER ART TVYou play as an escaped death row inmate who must violently kill psychopaths with makeshift weapons like plastic bags and pieces of glass as part of a sick TV show. But the tone of the game itself is pretty damn disturbing. Certainly it’s one of Rockstar’s weaker titles. OK, in part, that’s because it’s not the greatest game. Manhunt is a game that will actually make you feel dirty from playing it. The vacant stare of a gray alien is always unnerving, but what really makes this cover over the top is when you look at it for a few seconds and realize that this gray is actually made of hundreds of human skulls. While the cover of first game in the rebooted series, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, focused on the military unit at your command, the second game perfectly illustrates the depressing state of the world in the sequel. The lore of the XCOM games has long portrayed the grays as uncaring conquerors of the human race, and XCOM 2 begins with the aliens actually controlling Earth. There are a lot of disturbing scenes in The Evil Within, and the first one actually hits you as soon as you pick up the box. ![]() Nothing gets that point across better than the cover, which features protagonist Sebastian Castellanos screaming, his face covered in barbed wire. Mikami has talked about how he wanted to get across to players the idea that every enemy in The Evil Within was being punished. Shinji Mikami’s follow-up to his work on the Resident Evil franchise received some flack for being much more difficult than those games, but that really just adds to the tension that makes The Evil Within a much more unsettling game than the last few Resident Eviltitles. Doom 3 may be something of a black sheep of the franchise now after the more action-packed follow-up came out earlier this year, but it easily holds the title of best box art in the franchise. Doom 3’s graphics were insanely advanced when the game first came out, and there was perhaps no better way to get that across than with the screaming face of a Hell-Knight standing in front of a pentagram on the front cover. ![]() There’s a lot to be said for understated and well-thought out box art (there’s quite a few of those on this list), but sometimes a giant, pissed-off demon just gets your point across just as well. If you have a psychopath with a chainsaw in your game, that’s something you really want to play up on the cover. It’s baffling as to why Capcom ever ditched this image for covers just focusing on Leon in later releases. While subsequent re-releases have added more modes and better graphics, the original release still has the very best box art, featuring an armed Leon Kennedy running from an army of Las Plagas and the iconic chainsaw guy. Resident Evil 4 has been released so many different times now that it’s easy to forget its roots as a GameCube exclusive. The game’s cover did look great while it collected dust on your shelf for all eternity. While every other publisher out there put cutesy cartoon characters on their boxes to copy Nintendo’s success, publisher LJN used a freaky photo of Jason Vorhees holding an ax with some psychedelic colors in the background. But pretty much everyone who had an NES back in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s played it. ![]() The actual gameplay has no redeeming qualities. I think they went through about 30 years of neglect, until Sony took over at the end of the 1980s. If you ask me, the Columbia Pictures film elements looked worse. Fox is actually one of the better-organized studios in terms of keeping track of their negatives and other materials, and they've spent quite a bit of money sprucing things up over the years. But since Fox always owned DeLuxe (since 1919), that was pretty much always their main lab. ![]() Some of the 3-strip Fox Technicolor negatives did survive. We use a digital still of the last "good" frame as a reference, but sometimes, all we can do is just put a bandaid on the problem and say "this is the best we can do." To fix this, we have to resort to power windows, gradiated filter effects, and all kinds of nonsense. Sometimes, two perfs are bad, so the top half of the picture is one color, and the bottom half is another color. And the stuff from the 1950s and 1960s can be really awful.Ĭompounding this is that the lab technicians from that era tried to color-time the transitions, and their optical printers sometimes malfunctioned, resulting in the change happening on the top half of the frame first (what I call a 1-perf mislight). It got better in the 1980s, but I'd say anything earlier than that is difficult. Often, the color-matching is non-linear, meaning the picture is brighter on the left than it is on the right, or it's purple at the top but greenish at the bottom, so trying to get the images to match 100% is almost impossible with very old films. We try very, very hard in digital mastering to meticulously match these transitions so that the "bump" on the splice isn't too visible, but the knobs only go so far. Because the dissolve or fade requires going down two generations (interpositive -> internegative), and the film stock is completely different from the virgin camera negative stock into which it's spliced, it has completely different shading, color, grain, and sharpness characteristics. After the credits are over and you are out of "dupe-world", it does indeed look very nice.Ĭlick to expand. In lab terms, it's a cut-in optical (as explained by several people above). I eventualy figured out that he was basing his entire assessment on the opening scenes of the film. I remembered it being one of the better looking VistaVision films from that era on home video, and was puzzled by the reviewers comments. I read an online review of the Kirk Douglas/Burt Lancaster "Gunfight at the OK Corral" DVD from Paramount one time where the reviewer savaged it for its terrible picture quality. Opticals used for the title sequences of films can exhibit the same issues. There are a lot of long takes in the film on the poor dupe stock. Not only is the dupe stock horrible and replete with "ringing" artifacts that look like extreme video edge enhancement, but they used the dupe film stock from the fade all the way until the next hard cut rather rather than just for the length of the fade. Perhaps the worst example in existence for a major film is George Stevens' "Giant". They are always a couple of generations lower than the source, and the issue is often compounded because a lot of crappy dupe stocks were used over the years (with occasionally crappy lab work, particularly by the in-house labs at the studios in the early Eastman color era ). ![]() In early years of digitalizing those movies, those transitions were left as they were and only "clean negative" was dust busted, stabilized and color graded. The biggest problem is to match color of the rest, stabilizing and dust busting those transitions and fades, because it is time consuming. But now, when using digital technology and scanning original negatives, or in many cases, scanning new intermediate positives made from negatives, it is really "beating the eyes". FADE IN FILM MOVIEIntermediates and positive prints have a tendention to loss some colors and details too, so if you saw a movie back then in movie theatre, those transitions and fades weren't so different as other scenes. So there was automaticaly two generation loss. Then they made fades on printer onto another negative, which was then spliced to a master negative. So, in that times, they made an intermediate positive from negative and a projection positive from intermediate. Truth is, that fades were made on optical printer. Click to expand.Well, this is not reassembling old prints with negative. ![]() |
